Late July gives the Highlands their longest days and best odds of good weather, with heather starting to bloom on the moors. This road trip loops from Inverness through Loch Ness, Skye, and Glencoe, built for a rental car and a loose schedule.
Day 1: Inverness and Loch Ness
Pick up your rental car in Inverness, then drive the shore road along Loch Ness, stopping at Urquhart Castle for views over the water. Overnight in Drumnadrochit or continue toward Skye.
Day 2: Isle of Skye
Cross the bridge to Skye and hike the Old Man of Storr or the Quiraing, two of the island's most dramatic rock formations. Base yourself in Portree for its harbor views and easy access to both trailheads.
Day 3: Fairy Pools and Neist Point
Spend the morning at the Fairy Pools, a series of clear blue swimming holes below the Black Cuillin mountains, then drive out to Neist Point for sunset at Skye's westernmost lighthouse.
Day 4: Glencoe
Drive south through Glencoe, one of Scotland's most photographed valleys, stopping at the Three Sisters viewpoint and the Glencoe Lochan trails. Fort William makes a good overnight base for dinner with a view of Ben Nevis.
Day 5: Return to Inverness
Loop back to Inverness via the Commando Memorial and Culloden Battlefield for a dose of Highland history before dropping off the car.
Practical notes: Single-track roads with passing places are common on Skye, drive slowly and pull over for faster cars behind you. Midges (tiny biting insects) are worst at dawn and dusk in summer, pack repellent. Weather changes fast, bring layers even in July.

Budget: B&Bs in Portree and Fort William run $90-130 a night in July.
Mid-range: The Bosville Hotel in Portree offers comfortable rooms above the harbor for $200-260 a night.
Splurge: Kinloch Lodge on Skye pairs a historic manor with a Michelin-starred restaurant from around $450 a night.

Loch Bay Restaurant on Skye: A tiny seafood spot with a big reputation, book ahead.
Cafe Arriba in Portree: Colorful, casual, and good for a hearty breakfast before hiking.
Crannog Seafood Restaurant in Fort William: Fresh catch on the pier with views of Loch Linnhe.
