Late July brings warm, changeable weather to the Azores, ideal for hiking crater lakes and swimming in volcanic pools before the fall storm season. This 5-day route covers Sao Miguel, the largest and most accessible island for a first visit.
Day 1: Ponta Delgada
Arrive in Ponta Delgada and wander the black-and-white basalt streets of the old town. Walk out to the Portas da Cidade gates and along the marina before an early dinner, jet lag hits hard on the first day.
Day 2: Sete Cidades
Drive to the Sete Cidades crater, where twin lakes, one blue, one green, fill an ancient volcanic caldera. Hike the rim trail for the classic postcard view, then descend to swim in Lagoa Verde.
Day 3: Furnas Valley
Head to Furnas, where volcanic vents bubble up through the town's parks. Soak in the thermal pools at Terra Nostra Park, then try cozido, a stew traditionally cooked underground using the earth's natural heat.
Day 4: Whale Watching and Lagoa do Fogo
Take a morning whale-watching tour, the waters around Sao Miguel see sperm whales and dolphins year-round. In the afternoon, hike to Lagoa do Fogo, a lake ringed by protected highlands with no road access to the shore.
Day 5: Coastal Drive and Departure
Spend the morning driving the north coast to Ribeira Grande and Mosteiros for a last look at the island's dramatic cliffs before flying out of Ponta Delgada.
Practical notes: Azores weather changes fast, pack a rain shell even in summer. Rent a car, public transit is limited outside Ponta Delgada. Book whale-watching a day ahead, tours sell out and get canceled in rough seas.
