Late July brings warm swimming water and long days to Corsica's cliffside roads. This route circles the island's west coast, mixing red granite calanques, hilltop citadels, and beach towns most visitors skip.
Day 1: Ajaccio
Start in Ajaccio, Napoleon's birthplace, wandering the old town's markets before an afternoon swim at Plage de Palombaggia-style coves nearby. Pick up a rental car here for the rest of the trip.
Day 2: Calanques de Piana
Drive the coast road through the Calanques de Piana, a UNESCO-listed stretch of red granite cliffs plunging into the sea. Stop often, the pullouts along this road offer some of the best views in the Mediterranean.
Day 3: Porto and Girolata
Take a boat trip from Porto to the tiny village of Girolata, accessible only by sea or a two-hour hike, for a swim in one of Corsica's most secluded bays.
Day 4: Calvi
Continue north to Calvi, where a Genoese citadel overlooks a long sandy beach. Spend the afternoon swimming and the evening at a harborside table watching the sunset over the bay.
Day 5: Ile Rousse and Departure
Stop in L'Ile-Rousse for a final swim and browse the Friday market before returning your car and flying home.
Practical notes: The coast road between Piana and Porto is narrow with sheer drops, drive slowly and be ready to reverse for oncoming cars. Book the Girolata boat trip a day ahead in peak season. Ferries from mainland France and Italy fill up fast if you're bringing a car over rather than flying.
