Glacier National Park: A 5-Day Montana Adventure

Early August is prime time for Glacier National Park, when the Going-to-the-Sun Road is fully open and alpine wildflowers carpet the high passes. This 5-day itinerary covers the park's best hikes, lakes, and lodges.

Day 1: West Glacier and Lake McDonald

Settle in at Lake McDonald, the park's largest lake, and take an easy stroll along its colorful lakeshore stones. Visit the historic Lake McDonald Lodge in the evening.

Day 2: Going-to-the-Sun Road and Logan Pass

Drive the full length of this engineering marvel, stopping at Logan Pass to hike the Hidden Lake Overlook trail for views of mountain goats and glacial cirques.

Day 3: Many Glacier Valley

Hike to Grinnell Glacier or Iceberg Lake, two of the park's most iconic trails, passing turquoise lakes and active grizzly habitat.

Day 4: Two Medicine and Boat Tour

Take the historic wooden boat tour across Two Medicine Lake, then hike to Twin Falls for a quieter, less-crowded corner of the park.

Day 5: St. Mary and Departure

Catch sunrise at St. Mary Lake for reflections of Wild Goose Island before driving out through the park's eastern gateway.

Practical notes: Going-to-the-Sun Road requires vehicle reservations in summer, book them the moment they release. Many Glacier and other popular trailheads fill parking lots by 7am. Carry bear spray and know how to use it.

Where to Stay

Budget: Campgrounds inside the park run $10-30 a night but book out months ahead in summer.

Mid-range: Motels in West Glacier or St. Mary run $180-250 a night in August.

Splurge: The historic Many Glacier Hotel sits right on Swiftcurrent Lake from around $350 a night.

Where to Eat

Eddie's Cafe in Apgar Village: Classic huckleberry pie and hearty breakfasts.

Russell's Fireside Dining Room at Lake McDonald Lodge: Montana ranch fare with lake views.

Two Sisters Cafe near St. Mary: Quirky roadside spot known for fresh pie and big portions.
