JW Marriott Just Did Something It Has Never Done Before

The JW Marriott Costa Elena Resort & Spa opens on 10 September in Guanacaste, on Costa Rica’s northern Pacific coast, and it arrives with a label the brand has never used before: all-inclusive. JW Marriott has spent three decades positioning itself as the quieter, more restrained end of the Marriott luxury portfolio, built around spas, wellness programming and destination dining rather than wristbands and buffet lines. Costa Elena is the first property to put that identity inside a single-rate model.

The location is not incidental. Guanacaste has become the centre of gravity for Costa Rican resort development, anchored by Liberia’s Daniel Oduber Quirós International Airport, which spares North American visitors the long transfer from San José. The province offers dry-forest landscapes, a reliable December-to-April dry season and beaches within easy reach of national parks, which is precisely the combination that lets an operator sell a resort stay and an excursion programme as one product.

The strategic logic runs deeper than one hotel. Luxury all-inclusive has been among the fastest-growing categories in the Caribbean and Latin America, and the major branded groups have spent recent years buying or building their way into it rather than ceding the segment to specialists. Putting a flagship name on the format is a signal that the category is no longer treated as a downmarket compromise, and that guests who would previously have booked a European city break are being courted for a beach week instead.

For travellers the practical questions are the ones that always decide whether an all-inclusive is worth it: what the rate actually covers, whether premium restaurants and spa treatments sit inside or outside it, and how loyalty benefits apply when there is no room rate to upgrade in the usual sense. A September opening also puts the property into service at the tail of Costa Rica’s green season, which means lower shoulder rates and a wetter, greener landscape for anyone willing to trade guaranteed sun for value.
