Delta Picked Up What American Put Down the Same Day

Hyatt Hotels Corporation announced a long-term loyalty pact with Delta Air Lines on the same day it confirmed the end of its enhanced partnership with American Airlines. The new arrangement will connect Delta SkyMiles and World of Hyatt for elite customers of both programs, and Hyatt framed it as delivering one of the most requested benefits its members have asked for. For a hotel group that has built its reputation on a comparatively generous points currency, the choice of airline partner resets a decade of travel-planning habits.

The centrepiece is dual earning. When the collaboration launches, eligible elite members of both programs will be able to earn World of Hyatt points and Delta miles on qualifying travel – not one or the other, but both. Eligible World of Hyatt elite members will earn World of Hyatt points on qualifying Delta airfare purchases within qualifying fare classes, and Delta SkyMiles Medallion members will be eligible to earn miles for qualifying stays at participating Hyatt properties. Dual earning across a hotel and airline pairing is rare, and it is the specific feature that loyalty members have spent years requesting.

What has not been announced is nearly as important as what has. Hyatt and Delta said they will release additional information about the partnership soon, and have not yet published a launch date, the qualifying fare classes, the earning rates, which Hyatt properties count as participating, or whether reciprocal status recognition or elite-night credit will feature at all. Until those details land, members cannot calculate whether the new arrangement is worth more or less than what is being lost on the American side.

The executives pitched it as a premium-experience alignment rather than a points mechanic. Mark Hoplamazian, Hyatt’s chairman, president and chief executive, said exceptional travel extends far beyond a hotel stay and that the two companies share a vision for premium experiences across the full journey. Delta chief executive Ed Bastian said premium at Delta has never been about just a seat but a standard of care across the journey, calling Hyatt a natural fit. The practical test will be the earning tables, whenever they appear.
