A 3-day road trip through Glacier National Park: a night at historic Lake McDonald Lodge, a full crossing of Going-to-the-Sun Road over the Continental Divide at Logan Pass, the boardwalk-and-trail hike out to Hidden Lake Overlook, a night at Many Glacier Hotel on Swiftcurrent Lake, and a ride on the historic wooden tour boats past two lakes the next morning — with real lodges, real prices, and no vehicle reservation required for 2026.
Day 1Kalispell to Lake McDonald
Fly into Glacier Park International Airport, pick up a rental car, and drive the easy half hour to West Glacier for a first look at Lake McDonald before the park’s big scenic drive starts tomorrow.
🚗 Rental Car — Glacier Park International Airport
~5 minutes from the terminal · from about $70 USD/day
Glacier Park International Airport (FCA) in Kalispell has rental counters on-site, about 30 miles from West Glacier — a car is essential for this trip, since the park’s lodges and trailheads are spread across a full day’s drive from end to end.

🚙 Self-Drive — Kalispell to West Glacier
~35 minutes · via US-2 W
A straight shot on US-2 along the Flathead River, with the Whitefish Range coming into view before the road crosses into the park’s west entrance corridor.
🍽️ Dinner — Belton Grill Dining Room, Belton Chalet
~1.5 hours · entrees $29–$69 USD
A 1910 railway chalet just outside the park’s west entrance, one of the oldest buildings in the Glacier area — the dining room leans into Montana game and steaks, with a stone fireplace and a wraparound porch for the wait.

🛎️ Overnight — Lake McDonald Lodge
From $248–320 USD/night, for 2 people
A 1913 Swiss-chalet-style lodge on the shore of Glacier’s largest lake, its lobby hung with taxidermy and hunting trophies from the original owner — the lakeside rooms put the water and the Continental Divide’s peaks right outside the window.

Day 2Going-to-the-Sun Road & Logan Pass
The full crossing of Glacier’s most famous road, a hike out to an overlook above a turquoise lake, and a drive around to the park’s grizzly-country side.
🏞️ Self-Drive — Going-to-the-Sun Road, West to East
~2.5 hours one-way · $35 USD vehicle entrance (7-day pass); no timed-entry reservation required for 2026
A 50-mile engineering feat completed in 1932, climbing from Lake McDonald’s cedar forests to the bare rock of Logan Pass at 6,646 feet before dropping to St. Mary Lake on the east side — the park suspended its vehicle-reservation system for 2026, but an early start before 6am still avoids the worst midday backups at Logan Pass, which now caps parking at three hours.
🥾 Hidden Lake Overlook Trail
~2.7 miles round trip, 550 ft gain · ~1.5–2 hours
A boardwalk through subalpine meadows from the Logan Pass Visitor Center gives way to a dirt trail climbing to an overlook above Hidden Lake and Bearhat Mountain — mountain goats and bighorn sheep are a near-guarantee along the boardwalk section.
🚙 Self-Drive — St. Mary to Many Glacier
~1 hour · via US-89 N & MT-3
The drive north from St. Mary skirts St. Mary Lake and Wild Goose Island before cutting west into the Many Glacier valley, widely considered the most dramatic mountain scenery in the park and the best place to spot grizzlies from the road.
🛎️ Overnight — Many Glacier Hotel
From $296–452 USD/night, for 2 people
A 1915 Swiss-chalet-style hotel on the shore of Swiftcurrent Lake, ringed by some of the park’s highest peaks — built by the Great Northern Railway to lure train passengers into calling Glacier “America’s Switzerland.”

Day 3Swiftcurrent Lake & Departure
A last morning on the water aboard Glacier’s historic wooden tour boats, then the drive back out to the airport.
⛵ Swiftcurrent Lake & Lake Josephine Boat Tour
~1.5 hours · $41.70 USD/adult round trip
A ride on the historic wooden boats Chief Two Guns and Morning Eagle across two lakes, with a short walk between them past a waterfall — the same operator has run these tours since the 1930s, and the captains narrate the peaks and glaciers ringing the valley the whole way.
Glacier Park Boat Company · +14062572426 · www.glacierparkboats.com
🚙 Self-Drive — Many Glacier to Glacier Park International Airport
~2.5 hours · via MT-3, US-89 & US-2
The return route drops south through Browning and along the Blackfeet Reservation before rejoining US-2 back to Kalispell — return the rental car with a full tank and allow extra buffer for summer traffic through West Glacier.
✈️ Departure — Glacier Park International Airport
Self-guided · allow the standard check-in buffer
Closes out three days that ran from a 1913 lakeside lodge to grizzly country and a historic wooden-boat crossing — the small regional terminal at FCA moves quickly, but summer flights fill up, so confirm check-in times ahead.
