American Lost Hyatt in the Morning and Delta Had It by Evening

On September 9, American Airlines confirmed it is ending its long-running reciprocal partnership with World of Hyatt. Within hours — not days — Delta Air Lines announced a new strategic loyalty partnership with the same hotel group. The speed of the sequence told frequent flyers everything about how the deal came together: this was not American being jilted and Hyatt shopping around afterward, it was a switch that had been negotiated well before either announcement went out.

The wind-down has dates worth writing down. November 15, 2026 is the last day to link an AAdvantage account to World of Hyatt. World of Hyatt members can continue earning AAdvantage awards through December 31, 2026. AAdvantage members can continue earning World of Hyatt awards through February 28, 2027, which is when the partnership formally ends. Anyone mid-way through a status match or a points run has a narrow, clearly signposted window to finish it.

The old American-Hyatt arrangement was one of the more generous cross-program tie-ups in US travel, offering reciprocal elite recognition and double-dipping on qualifying stays and flights. Replacing it with Delta creates an obvious geographic logic — Delta’s Atlanta, Detroit, Minneapolis and Salt Lake City strongholds map onto Hyatt’s US footprint differently than American’s Dallas and Charlotte hubs do — and gives Hyatt a partner whose premium-cabin passenger base looks a lot like its own guest base.

What Delta and Hyatt have not announced is a launch date. The initial framing covers reciprocal earning and elite recognition across SkyMiles and World of Hyatt, with the specifics promised in the coming months — which means there may be a gap between the American partnership ending and the Delta one starting. Travelers holding both American and Hyatt status should assume the current benefits work exactly as advertised until the published cutoffs, capture whatever value they can before them, and should not assume that whatever Delta eventually offers will be a like-for-like replacement.
