Sydney Built a Power Point Big Enough for a Cruise Ship

The Port Authority of New South Wales has announced that the onshore power supply system at White Bay Cruise Terminal is now installed, which it describes as among the most complex engineering milestones the roughly $60 million project has faced. When it enters service, White Bay will be the first cruise terminal in the Southern Hemisphere able to supply shore power, allowing visiting ships to shut down their diesel generators and draw electricity from the grid instead, offset by renewable generation.

The hardware is less glamorous than the headline. The onshore power supply occupies ten shipping containers housing transformers, converters and switchgear, and the engineering difficulty lies in matching grid supply to what a cruise ship actually needs — the right voltage, the right frequency, and enough of it to run a floating town of several thousand people without interruption while the vessel is alongside. Get any of that wrong and a ship cannot connect at all, which is why the Port Authority singled the installation out as the most complex step in the build. Shore power fails quietly and expensively when the interface is imperfect.

One detail reveals how much heat that equipment generates: the installation uses a seawater cooling system, the first time such a system has been fitted in an operational port in Sydney. The Port Authority has noted the precedent, which is the seawater cooling installed at the Sydney Opera House during its construction. Borrowing a solution from a building finished in 1973 to cool 2026 power electronics is a reasonable reminder that the harbour itself is the most abundant resource on site.

White Bay’s shore power matters because of where the terminal sits. It is surrounded by dense inner-city residential neighbourhoods in Balmain and Rozelle, and ships idling on diesel for a full day have been a persistent local grievance about emissions and noise. Construction is expected to finish by the end of 2026, with vessels beginning testing and connecting during the 2026-27 summer cruise season. Not every ship will be able to plug in immediately, because the vessel needs compatible equipment of its own, but the newest tonnage arriving in Australian waters increasingly carries it as standard. Sydney is betting that the fleet catches up to the quay rather than the other way around.
