Frontier Airlines will begin flying nonstop between Detroit and New York LaGuardia on 20 November. The schedule is unusual and tells you what the airline thinks the market is: daily service through the peak holiday travel period, then dropping to three times weekly for the rest of the year. Rather than commit to a daily frequency year-round, Frontier is pricing the route as a seasonal-peak play with a thin off-season backbone underneath it.
The city pair is not new. It was flown by Spirit Airlines, and Frontier has been systematically reactivating routes Spirit gave up, a pattern visible across its network additions this year. Detroit in particular has become a focus, with the carrier describing the LaGuardia addition as part of rapid growth at the airport. For a low-cost carrier, inheriting a route with an established price expectation and no incumbent low-fare competitor is about as clean an opportunity as the domestic map offers.
Detroit to New York is a Delta stronghold, which makes the economics interesting. Delta runs the route frequently from its Detroit hub, and connecting traffic is a large part of that. Frontier is not competing for connections; it is competing for the point-to-point passenger who wants the cheapest way between two cities and does not need a 7am departure. The three-times-weekly off-season pattern is a concession that the segment of travellers willing to trade schedule for fare is real but not daily.
For travellers, the practical effect should be downward pressure on LaGuardia fares out of Detroit through the holidays, particularly on the dates where Frontier is flying daily. The caveat is the one that always applies to ultra-low-cost fares: the headline price excludes carry-on bags, seat assignments and changes. On a two-hour flight where the base fare undercuts the competition substantially, that arithmetic often still works out. On a Thanksgiving booking with a bag, it frequently does not.
