Holland America’s Free Beach Now Has a Better Beach

Holland America Line unveiled a set of upgrades to RelaxAway, Half Moon Cay on 22 September, and the headline addition is a new Beach Club that guests pay separately to enter. A day pass, bookable from early October, buys dedicated waiter service, unlimited alcoholic and non-alcoholic drinks, included beach accessories, specialty food and drink, and priority tendering from the ship to the island. The rest of the island remains free to all passengers, as it has been since the line bought the cay in 1996.

The priority tendering is the part experienced cruisers will notice first. Half Moon Cay has no pier, so every passenger reaches the beach by tender, and the queue on a full-ship day has always been the weak point of an otherwise well-run private island. Selling a way to skip it converts the island’s main operational constraint into a revenue line, which is a familiar move: Royal Caribbean, Disney and MSC have all built tiered access into their private destinations over the past few years.

The rest of the work is less pointed and more overdue. There is a new food pavilion, upgraded cabanas, more daybeds and beach chairs, refreshed clamshells and two-person canopy loungers, refurbished bars, and four pickleball courts. Taken together it is the most substantial investment in the island since Carnival Corporation began redeveloping it, and it is timed to land before the destination’s 30th anniversary in 2027.

Guests can see the finished version on more than two dozen Caribbean itineraries sailing between October 2026 and April 2027. The Beach Club day pass price had not been published at the time of the announcement, and capacity will be limited, which suggests it will sell out on sea-day-heavy sailings well before departure. If the tender queue is what has put you off Half Moon Cay in the past, that is the thing to watch for when booking opens in early October.
