One Ship, Two Companies, Two Hemispheres, Ten Years

Travelmarvel’s first ocean-going ship, due in April 2029, will spend roughly half of each year operated by somebody else. APT Travel Group will own the vessel outright, run it in the Mediterranean under the Travelmarvel brand, and then hand it to Quark Expeditions for Antarctic expedition voyages during the Southern Hemisphere summer, beginning with the 2029-30 season. The arrangement runs for ten years.

The ship is small and deliberately so: 99 suites carrying an estimated 160 to 170 guests, positioned as a four-star-plus yacht in Travelmarvel’s premium small-ship tier, with a PC6 ice-class hull capable of Antarctic operation. That hull specification is what makes the double life possible. A vessel built purely for the Mediterranean cannot go south; one built purely for ice tends to be a compromise everywhere else. PC6 sits at the point where both seasons are viable without either being ideal.

The commercial logic is about permits and people rather than steel. Antarctic operation requires IAATO membership, national permitting, experienced expedition leaders, zodiac drivers and lecture staff, and a logistics chain through Ushuaia that takes years to build. Quark has all of it. Rather than assemble a polar operation from nothing, APT is buying the asset and renting the expertise, while Quark gets a modern ice-class ship without financing one.

For travellers the practical read is that the same vessel will be sold under two brands to two entirely different audiences, at two very different price points. That is not unusual in expedition cruising, where charters and shared tonnage are common, but a ten-year arrangement written into the ship’s original business case is a firmer commitment than most. The Mediterranean seasons will be the softer product; the Antarctic ones will be the ones that pay for the hull.
