The World’s Longest Flight Finally Has a Month

Qantas has put a month on Project Sunrise. Daily nonstop flights between Sydney and London will begin in October 2027, and tickets go on sale in February 2027. The route becomes the longest scheduled commercial service in the world on its first day, at up to about 22 hours in the air. A nonstop Sydney to New York service follows afterward, with its own on-sale date to be confirmed. After nearly a decade of research flights, aircraft orders and slipped timelines, the project now has a date a traveller can actually plan around.

The aircraft is the reason it works. Qantas has ordered a dedicated fleet of Airbus A350-1000ULR jets built to a specification that trades payload for range, including an additional fuel tank. Each is configured with roughly 238 seats across four cabins, well below what an A350-1000 normally carries. That low density is not generosity so much as physics: an aircraft flying for 22 hours cannot carry a full load of passengers, bags and cargo and still reach the other end, so the seat count comes down and the fare per seat goes up.

Qantas has also designed the cabin around the duration rather than the distance. The aircraft include a dedicated wellbeing zone in the economy section, with the airline’s research flights having tested lighting, meal timing and movement schedules intended to reset passengers’ body clocks in flight rather than on arrival. Whether any of that meaningfully beats jet lag is a question the first full season of paying passengers will answer more honestly than a test flight did.

The commercial logic is straightforward even if the engineering is not. Australians flying to Europe currently change planes in Singapore, Dubai, Doha or Hong Kong, handing a slice of every fare to a Gulf or Asian hub carrier. A nonstop keeps the whole journey — and the whole fare — inside Qantas. The premium travellers will pay to skip a connection and save several hours is the entire business case, and February’s on-sale date is when the market gets to price it.
