MSC Is Building a Second Private Island Right Next Door

MSC Group’s cruise division has formally started work on Sandy Cay, a new private island in the Bahamas that sits right beside its existing Ocean Cay MSC Marine Reserve. The groundbreaking ceremony took place on September 28 and was attended by Pierfrancesco Vago, executive chairman of the cruise division, along with Bahamian government officials including Prime Minister Philip Davis. The ceremony was largely symbolic, since site work has already been under way for some time, but it marks the project’s official public start ahead of a planned 2028 opening.

The interesting part is the positioning. Ocean Cay is MSC’s big, busy island stop, built to handle full shiploads of guests. Sandy Cay is being pitched as the opposite: smaller, quieter and more upscale, with a focus on wellness, relaxation and the natural setting. Plans call for five beaches, dining venues, lounging areas and private retreats. Rather than replacing Ocean Cay, the new island is meant to complement it, giving MSC a way to offer two very different beach days in the same corner of the Bahamas.

Sandy Cay will be reserved for guests of MSC Cruises and Explora Journeys, the group’s luxury ocean brand. That detail matters because Explora passengers pay considerably more per night and have tended to avoid the crowded private-island experience that mainstream lines sell. A dedicated, lower-density island gives the luxury brand a Caribbean stop it controls entirely, while also giving MSC Cruises a premium add-on for its own higher-paying guests, such as those in its Yacht Club suites.

The move fits a wider industry pattern. Cruise lines have been pouring money into private destinations because they keep onshore spending inside the company and let lines guarantee a beach day without depending on busy public ports. Royal Caribbean, Carnival and Norwegian have all expanded their own islands and beach clubs in recent years. For travellers, the practical impact is still a couple of years away, but anyone booking MSC or Explora Caribbean itineraries for 2028 and beyond should expect Sandy Cay to start appearing in the schedule.
