Norwegian’s Summer Just Beat Its Own Forecast

Cruise demand appears to be holding up better than even the cruise lines expected. Norwegian Cruise Line Holdings, the parent of Norwegian Cruise Line, Oceania Cruises and Regent Seven Seas Cruises, said on Wednesday, September 30, that its third-quarter results will exceed the guidance it issued earlier in the year, driven primarily by better-than-expected revenue. The quarter covers July through September, the heart of the summer season in Europe, Alaska and the Caribbean.

The company had previously forecast adjusted earnings of 90 cents a share and adjusted EBITDA of $874 million for the quarter, but did not give updated figures. It reaffirmed its full-year 2026 guidance of about $1.50 per share. Alongside the update, NCLH announced a $750 million private offering of senior notes due 2031, which it plans to use to redeem higher-interest notes due in 2028 and pay down other borrowings. Shares rose around two per cent at the market open.

The update fits a broader pattern. Carnival Corporation recently reported a record quarter, and cruise lines have continued to fill ships at firm prices even as airlines scale back Middle East flying and some travellers rethink long-haul trips. Cruises package accommodation, meals and transport into a single upfront price, which has made them attractive to cost-conscious travellers, and itineraries can be rerouted away from trouble spots more easily than land-based holidays.

For travellers, strong demand has a practical downside: fewer deep discounts. When lines are beating revenue forecasts, they have little reason to slash fares on popular sailings. Anyone planning a 2027 cruise, particularly for school holidays or peak Alaska and Mediterranean dates, is likely to find better cabin choice by booking early rather than waiting for last-minute deals. Watch for value instead in shoulder-season sailings and repositioning voyages, where pricing tends to be more flexible.
