Day 1Garden of the Gods & Pikes Peak

Fly into Colorado Springs, pick up your rental car, and head straight for the towering red sandstone formations of Garden of the Gods before the crowds and afternoon thunderstorms roll in — then ride the cog railway to the top of a 14,000-foot mountain.

🏨 Check-In — The Cliff House at Pikes Peak, Manitou Springs

Check-in 4pm · from $114/night

This restored 1873 Victorian landmark sits on Manitou Avenue a few minutes from the cog railway depot and the base of Pikes Peak. It’s an easy walk to Manitou’s mineral springs fountains and the start of the Manitou Incline, and a short drive to Garden of the Gods.

📸 Garden of the Gods Self-Guided Hike

1–2 hrs · free entry

The park’s free Visitor & Nature Center has trail maps and a short orientation film, but the main event is outside: the easy, paved 1.5-mile Perkins Central Garden Trail loops past Balanced Rock and the Cathedral Spires. Go early — the gates open at 5am and sunrise light on the red rock is the park’s signature shot, with far less traffic in the lots than midday.

🚂 Pikes Peak Cog Railway

~3.5 hrs round trip · from $67/person (booked online)

The historic cog railway climbs just over 8 miles from Manitou Springs to the 14,115-foot summit of Pikes Peak, the mountain that inspired “America the Beautiful.” You get about 30–40 minutes at the top to take in the view before the train heads back down — bring a jacket even in summer, since the summit runs 30–40 degrees cooler than Manitou Springs.

🍽️ Dinner — Adam’s Mountain Café

Dinner · $18–28/person

A longtime Manitou Springs favorite for globally-inspired, locally-sourced cooking, with a patio that’s hard to beat on a warm evening. The menu leans vegetarian-friendly without ever feeling like an afterthought for everyone else at the table.

Day 2Royal Gorge & the Road South

Day two trades red rock for a thousand-foot canyon: a morning on the Royal Gorge Bridge, then a scenic afternoon drive south over Poncha Pass into the San Luis Valley, where the dunes are waiting.

🚗 Drive to Cañon City

45 min drive · self-guided via US-24 & CO-115

A quick, easy drive south from Manitou Springs through Fountain Valley and Cheyenne Canyon country to Cañon City, gateway to the Royal Gorge.

🌉 Royal Gorge Bridge & Park

2–3 hrs · from $35/person

Walk one of the highest suspension bridges in the country, 955 feet above the Arkansas River, then ride the gondola across the canyon for a view straight down into the gorge. Admission also covers the visitor center, theater, and the park’s smaller rides — arrive early, since afternoon wind can close the bridge to foot traffic in summer.

🚗 Scenic Drive to the San Luis Valley

~2.5 hrs drive · self-guided via CO-115 & US-285

The back half of the drive climbs over 9,010-foot Poncha Pass and drops into the wide, high-desert San Luis Valley, with the Sangre de Cristo Mountains rising sharply on your left for the final stretch toward the dunes.

🏨 Check-In — Great Sand Dunes Lodge, Mosca

Check-in 3pm · motel-style rooms, mountain & dune views

The closest lodging to the park entrance, a few minutes’ drive from the dune field, with a pool and unobstructed views of the Sangre de Cristos. Simple, clean rooms — book ahead in summer, since options this close to the park are limited.

Day 3Sandboarding the Dunes

Your last day belongs to the dunes: rent a sandboard and climb North America’s tallest dune field, then make the drive back to Colorado Springs in time for your flight home.

🏂 Sandboard & Sled Rental — Great Sand Dunes Oasis

Pick up by 9am · $20/board per day

The only outfitter renting sandboards and sleds for the park, just outside the entrance. Standard snowboard wax (not candle wax) is what makes the boards slide — they sell it on-site, and you’ll want it before you start climbing.

🏜️ High Dune & Star Dune

2–4 hrs round trip · $25/vehicle (7-day park pass)

There are no marked trails on the dunes — you just pick a line and climb. High Dune (699 ft) is the closest major summit from the main parking lot; the true high point, Star Dune (755 ft), is a longer, more strenuous trek further into the field. Go early to beat the heat, since the sand surface can top 140°F on a summer afternoon.

🚗 Drive Back to Colorado Springs

~3.5 hrs drive · self-guided via US-160 & US-50

The return route loops back north through Salida and up the Arkansas River valley, with one more round of mountain views before you drop your rental car at the airport.
