British Airways has started rolling out what it describes as a major revamp of its long-haul First Class soft product, beginning October 1 from its Heathrow hub. The overhaul covers almost everything a First passenger touches that is not the seat itself: serviceware, glassware, tableware, bedding, pyjamas and amenity kits, developed over several years with renewed British luxury partners.
The menu is changing too. British Airways is adding new meal options, including grill dishes and a superfood salad, alongside updated service standards that the airline says are designed to feel personalized while remaining recognisably British. One fixture survives the shake-up: the airline’s signature afternoon tea service is staying on board.
The timing is not accidental. The soft-product refresh arrives as British Airways prepares to introduce its new First suite, which is being installed on its Airbus A380 fleet. The first A380 to be refitted flew to Manila in August for a nose-to-tail retrofit of every cabin. The new suites include sliding privacy doors, 32-inch entertainment screens, a personal wardrobe and mini-bar, generous storage and a buddy-dining option, and the airline plans to fit them across all 12 A380s and its future Boeing 777X aircraft.
For now, passengers will notice the difference in the details rather than the hardware: what arrives on the tray table, what they sleep in and what goes home in the amenity kit. British Airways has faced years of criticism that its First cabin trailed rivals such as Emirates, Singapore Airlines and Air France. The soft-product overhaul is the first visible step in its attempt to close that gap before the new suites fly.
