France’s Autumn Holiday Has a Five-Day Flight Strike Inside It

Travelers heading to or from France during the autumn school holiday should mark October 17 to 21. Five unions representing pilots and cabin crew, SNPL, UNSA-PNC, SNPNC-FO, SNGAF and UNAC, have filed a joint national strike notice covering all flight crew employed under French labor law. The action runs from 00:01 on Saturday, October 17, to 23:59 on Wednesday, October 21, and lands squarely in the Toussaint holidays.

The dispute is about pensions. The government is reforming the cumul emploi-retraite system, which lets people keep working while drawing a pension, and the unions want flight crew and their dedicated pension fund, the CRPN, excluded from the new rules. Because the notice applies to all crew under French law, it covers Air France, Transavia France, HOP!, Corsair, Air Caraïbes and French bee, as well as the French bases of easyJet and Vueling.

So far no airline has announced cancellations linked to the notice, and the scale of disruption will depend on how many crew members take part. Under French rules, airline staff must declare their intention to strike 48 hours in advance, which lets carriers publish adjusted schedules shortly before each day. In past crew strikes, French airlines have typically protected long-haul flights and trimmed short- and medium-haul services rather than shutting down entirely.

If you are booked during those five days, check your airline’s app regularly from around October 15 and make sure your contact details are on the reservation so you receive notifications. EU rules require airlines to offer rebooking or a refund for cancelled flights, though cash compensation for strikes by an airline’s own staff is frequently disputed. Travelers with flexible plans may want to move trips to before October 17 or after October 21.
