Thailand shortened its visa-exempt stay from 60 days to 30 days on September 15, 2026. The change applies to visitors from roughly 60 eligible countries and territories, including the United States, the United Kingdom and most of Europe, so many holidaymakers planning a long trip now have a shorter default window.
Travelers who need more time are not shut out. A single extension of up to 30 days can be requested at an immigration office, but it is granted at the officer’s discretion rather than as a right. Anyone planning to stay beyond a month should treat the extension as a backup, not a guarantee, and consider applying for a longer-stay visa in advance.
Entry paperwork has also moved online. The Thailand Digital Arrival Card has replaced the old paper TM6 form, and visitors can complete it before landing or on arrival. Border officers may ask for accommodation details, proof of onward travel and evidence of sufficient funds, so it pays to have those ready.
The Traveler’s roundup of the updated advice also reminds visitors that the southwest monsoon runs through October, bringing heavy rain and flooding risk, and that some southern provinces warrant extra caution. For most tourists the 30-day rule is the change most likely to alter their plans.
