Kayaking Sea Caves, Then Walking the Ocean Floor — A 3-Day Bay of Fundy Road Trip

⚑ Report

Three days along the Bay of Fundy, home to the highest tides on Earth — a self-drive loop from Saint John’s reversing rapids to a sea-cave kayak tour in St. Martins, a night in the fishing village of Alma, and a walk across the ocean floor at Hopewell Rocks before the tide comes back in. Real inns, outfitters, and 2026 prices for every stop.

DURATION

3 Days

BEST TIME TO GO

June through September
Hopewell Rocks and most Fundy outfitters run mid-May through late October; July and August bring the warmest weather and biggest crowds, while June and September are quieter with the same reliable tides.

for 2 people, incl. 2 nights’ lodging, the sea-cave kayak tour, Hopewell Rocks admission & a rental car (excl. flights/drive to Saint John)

Day 1Saint John’s Reversing Rapids & Uptown

Pick up a rental car and get acquainted with Saint John’s tidal rapids before heading up the coast tomorrow.

🚗 Car Rental — Saint John Airport

~10 min curbside · from ~$55-70 USD/day

National, Enterprise, and Hertz all run counters at Saint John Airport (YSJ); book a compact or small SUV ahead in summer, when Fundy-bound rentals sell out early.

🛎️ Hotel Check-In — Hilton Saint John

From $170-200 USD / night, for 2 people

A harbor-side hotel connected to Market Square in the heart of uptown, an easy walk to the Saint John City Market and the Reversing Falls lookout.

Hilton Saint John · 1 Market Square, Saint John, NB

🏊 Reversing Falls Rapids

~1 hour, self-guided · free

Not a waterfall but a set of river rapids that reverse direction twice a day as the Bay of Fundy’s tide — the highest in the world — pushes back against the Saint John River; the best viewing is about two hours either side of high or low tide.

🍽️ Dinner — Saint John City Market

~1-1.5 hours · ~$20-30 USD / person

Canada’s oldest continuously-running farmers’ market, its saltbox-style timber roof sheltering seafood counters and small eateries selling fresh Fundy scallops and dulse, a local dried-seaweed snack.

Saint John City Market · 47 Charlotte St, Saint John, NB

Day 2St. Martins Sea Caves & Fundy National Park

A short drive to a fishing village known for its sea caves, then on to Fundy National Park before a lobster dinner on the wharf in Alma.

🚗 Scenic Drive — Saint John to St. Martins

~40 min · self-drive

A short coastal drive east out of Saint John to the covered bridges and red sandstone cliffs of St. Martins, one of the prettiest fishing villages on the Fundy coast.

🛶 Sea Caves Kayak Tour

~2.5 hours · from ~$70-85 USD / person

A guided paddle into St. Martins’ sea caves at low tide, carved into red sandstone cliffs by the same tides that will submerge the entrance again within hours.

Bay of Fundy Adventures (Red Rock Adventure) · 506-833-2231 · 415 Main St, St. Martins, NB

🥾 Fundy National Park — Dickson Falls Trail

~1 hour, self-guided · park day pass ~$12 USD / adult

A short boardwalk loop through an Acadian forest of moss-covered boulders and footbridges down to an 8-meter waterfall, one of the easiest and most scenic trails in the park.

🛎️ Overnight — Parkland Village Inn, Alma

From $150-180 USD / night, for 2 people, incl. on-site dinner option

Right on the water next to the fishermen’s wharf in Alma, with bay-facing rooms and its own Tides Restaurant for a lobster dinner before bed — Alma’s lobster boats unload just steps from the dining room.

Parkland Village Inn · 8601 Main St, Alma, NB

Day 3Hopewell Rocks & Magnetic Hill

A low-tide walk across the ocean floor at Hopewell Rocks, then a quick Moncton detour before the drive home.

🪨 Hopewell Rocks Provincial Park

~2-3 hours, self-guided · $18.15 USD / adult (valid 2 consecutive days)

Forty-foot sandstone formations known as ‘flowerpots,’ walkable on the exposed ocean floor at low tide and paddled past by kayak at high tide — the same spot looks like an entirely different place depending on when you arrive.

🧲 Magnetic Hill, Moncton

~30 min, self-guided · ~$8 USD / vehicle

A roadside optical-illusion stop where cars in neutral appear to roll uphill, a kitschy but quick detour on the way out of the Fundy region toward Moncton.

🚗 Return Drive & Departure

~45 min to Moncton Airport · ~2 hours back to Saint John

Drop the rental car at Greater Moncton Roméo LeBlanc International Airport for a shorter trip home, or backtrack to Saint John if that’s where the flight out departs.
