Gilded Castles by Day, Riverside Sunsets by Night — A 3-Day Thousand Islands Road Trip

⚑ Report

The St. Lawrence River splits into more than 1,800 islands along the New York–Ontario border, and a long weekend based in Alexandria Bay and Clayton is enough to see the region’s two Gilded Age castles, its best antique-boat collection, and the river itself from the deck of a tour boat. It’s an easy self-drive from Syracuse, and no passport is needed for any of it — even Dark Island, home to Singer Castle, sits on the US side of the river.

George Boldt began building this six-story, 120-room castle for his wife in 1900 and abandoned it mid-construction the day she died — it sat untouched for 73 years before the Thousand Islands Bridge Authority restored it. Uncle Sam Boat Tours runs the shuttle out from Alexandria Bay.

~2 hrs · ~$14 admission

The largest collection of antique recreational boats in North America, with runabouts, launches, and the restored houseboat La Duchesse on the water in Clayton — open 10am–5pm daily, May through October.
