Miami-Dade County announced on October 16 a set of measures aimed at the traffic jams that build around PortMiami on busy cruise days. The port expects 81 high-season days this winter when seven to 10 ships will be in port at once, and it recently handled its 10-millionth cruise passenger of the fiscal year, passing its previous annual record before the year ended. Those numbers explain why the county is acting before the season starts.
Some of the fixes are about routing. Passengers headed to Terminals AA, A, B, C and D are being steered to the PortMiami Tunnel, while those going to Terminals E, F, G, J and V should use the PortMiami Bridge. The port is also preparing short videos, titled “Arrive at Your Embarkation Time” and “Choosing the Right Entrance,” and plans to remind travelers to show up only at their assigned time, although no release date has been announced.
There is a technology piece as well. PortMiami is working with GridMatrix on AI-powered traffic monitoring meant to predict bottlenecks, and sheriff’s office and Miami police personnel will help direct vehicles around Biscayne Boulevard and downtown on the heaviest days. Designated cargo roads will continue to keep trucks off the busiest downtown routes and I-395.
A pilot program adds a free shuttle to Miami International Airport for Carnival Celebration guests on select dates beginning this month. Royal Caribbean’s existing free airport shuttle for Icon of the Seas passengers continues. For travelers, the practical advice is simple: check which terminal your ship uses, pick the matching tunnel or bridge approach, and do not arrive early, because the port is trying to spread arrivals across the day.
