Dallas’s Busiest Airline Is Rebuilding Its Home Terminal, Gate by Gate

Airport concourse with gate signs and rows of waiting-area seating

American Airlines has opened the first four gates of an expanded pier at Terminal A at Dallas Fort Worth International Airport, Travel Weekly reported. The addition covers 140,000 square feet, and the airline operates all of the gates.

Ten gates are planned in total, five renovated and five new. Two more are set to open within a couple of weeks, and the last four are expected to be ready for the holiday season. The report did not give exact dates for each gate or a cost for this phase.

Passengers will notice electronic boarding systems that scan boarding passes without an agent and control the pace of boarding. DFW first used the technology in its Terminal C expansion, which opened in June. The pier also adds more seating, power stations and new concessions.

The work is part of DFW Forward, a $12 billion capital program with more than 180 projects through the end of the decade. Once the Terminal A gates are fully open, crews will start rebuilding and expanding the rest of Terminal C, which American also uses. Travelers connecting through Dallas this winter should check their gate assignment, since some may now be in the new space.
