Marriott Wants to Show You Exactly How Far Back You Are in the Upgrade Line

Marriott is testing a feature that turns the mystery of room upgrades into something closer to an airline standby list. According to One Mile at a Time, a beta page in the Bonvoy app, titled Your Complimentary Upgrade Status, shows eligible members the estimated number of upgrades available and their current position on the list. In the example shown, zero upgrades were available and the member ranked second.

The page appears close to arrival, and Marriott says members will be told one day in advance whether an upgrade is confirmed. The article notes this does not fit neatly with the reality that some upgrades are processed overnight or on arrival day. Estimated availability reflects rooms matching the booked dates and bed type, and Nightly Upgrade Awards are prioritized ahead of complimentary upgrades and are not included in the counts.

Plenty is still unclear. Marriott has not explained how members are ranked, and the list does not distinguish between a higher-floor room and a suite. The feature is currently live at a small subset of hotels, with Marriott planning to expand it to more than 250 hotels in the US and Canada by early November 2026.

The reviewer sees transparency as a step forward but considers the tool too limited to be very useful for now, and suspects Marriott may also use it to sell upgrades. For elite members, the takeaway is modest: the beta will show where you stand, not guarantee a better room. Checking the app before arrival is worthwhile where the feature is live, but it is no substitute for asking at check-in.
