Cinque Terre: A 4-Day Hiking Itinerary

Late July is peak season on the Cinque Terre trails, hot and crowded but with all five villages and their connecting paths fully open. This route hits every village by train and foot, with time built in for swimming between hikes.

Day 1: Riomaggiore and Manarola

Base yourself in Riomaggiore and walk the short trail to Manarola in the early morning before the day-trippers arrive. Swim off the rocks near Manarola's harbor and watch the sunset from the village's famous viewpoint.

Day 2: Corniglia and Vernazza

Train to Corniglia, the only village not directly on the water, then hike the trail to Vernazza, widely considered the most scenic of the five. Cool off with a swim at Vernazza's small beach by the harbor.

Day 3: Monterosso al Mare

Spend the day in Monterosso, the only village with a proper sandy beach. Rent a lounge chair for the morning, then wander the old town's lemon groves and terraced vineyards in the afternoon.

Day 4: Sentiero Azzurro and Departure

Hike whichever section of the Sentiero Azzurro (Blue Trail) you haven't covered yet for a final coastal view before catching the train back to La Spezia.

Practical notes: Buy the Cinque Terre Card, it covers unlimited trains between villages plus trail access fees. Some trail sections close for maintenance or landslide risk, check current status before you go. Trains fill up fast in July, arrive at the platform early.

Where to Stay

Budget: Rooms for rent in Riomaggiore run $100-140 a night in July.

Mid-range: Small hotels in Monterosso cost $220-300 a night in peak season.

Splurge: Hotel Porto Roca in Monterosso offers cliffside sea views from around $500 a night.

Where to Eat

Nessun Dorma in Manarola: Bruschetta with a cliffside view, expect a line.

Trattoria Gianni Franzi in Vernazza: Harborfront seafood and pesto trofie.

Il Frantoio in Monterosso: Focaccia and local olive oil straight from the source.
