Lofoten Islands: A 5-Day Summer Itinerary

Late July is midnight sun season in the Lofoten Islands, with 24-hour daylight for hiking, fishing, and photographing the jagged peaks that rise straight from the sea. This 5-day route covers the archipelago's best villages and trailheads.

Day 1: Svolvaer Arrival

Fly into Svolvaer, the region's main hub, and hike up Fløya or the more demanding Festvagtind for a first look at the islands' saw-toothed peaks under the midnight sun.

Day 2: Reine and Reinebringen

Drive to Reine, the fishing village that appears on half of Norway's tourism posters, and hike the steep stone staircase up Reinebringen for the classic overhead view of the harbor.

Day 3: Kvalvika Beach

Hike over the mountain pass to Kvalvika, a white-sand beach with no road access, backed by dramatic cliffs. Camp overnight if you have gear, otherwise make it a long day trip under the still-bright midnight sky.

Day 4: Fishing Village Hopping

Drive south through Hamnoy and Å, tiny fishing hamlets at the end of the E10 highway, stopping to photograph the red rorbu cabins along the water.

Day 5: Uttakleiv Beach and Departure

Spend the morning at Uttakleiv Beach, known for its jumble of smooth boulders and views back toward the mountains, before flying out of Leknes or Svolvaer.

Practical notes: Rent a car, the E10 highway connects most of the sights but buses are infrequent. The Kvalvika hike is a few hours round trip with real elevation gain, wear proper boots. Book rorbu cabins months ahead, midnight sun season fills up early.

Where to Stay

Budget: Hostels in Svolvaer run $70-100 a night in July.

Mid-range: Traditional rorbu fishing cabins in Reine cost $180-260 a night in peak season.

Splurge: Eliassen Rorbuer's waterfront cabins in Hamnoy offer the classic postcard view from around $400 a night.

Where to Eat

Bacalao in Svolvaer: Modern Norwegian seafood with a harbor view.

Anitas Sjomat in Sakrisoy: A roadside stand famous for stockfish burgers.

Gammelbua in Reine: Fresh cod and local specialties on the water.
