The State Department’s online passport renewal platform, opened in 2024, has now issued more than 7.3 million passports, replacing a paper-based process the department had tried and failed to modernize for over a decade. Government surveys show 94% of users rating the experience positively.
Eligibility remains limited to routine renewals for now: the passport being renewed must be a 10-year adult book that is either expiring within one year or has been expired for less than five years, and applicants must be at least 25 years old.
The department is now piloting online applications for first-time passports, which would extend the system well beyond its current renewal-only scope and could eventually eliminate in-person appointments for a much larger share of applicants.
Travelers should be cautious of third-party websites that charge extra fees to “process” a passport renewal. The only official site for the online system is opr.travel.state.gov, and using it directly avoids unnecessary charges.
