Both islands sit in the Cyclades, both fill up with ferries all summer, and both show up on every Greek island shortlist. But they’re built for different trips. Here’s how to pick, or how to do both.
The quick answer
Want caldera views, sunset drama, and a slower pace? Go to Santorini. Want beach clubs, nightlife, and a livelier social scene with an easy day trip to somewhere calmer? Go to Mykonos, and pair it with Paros if you want a quieter contrast.
Vibe and pace
Santorini is built around the caldera: whitewashed villages stacked on cliffs, sunset crowds in Oia, and a genuinely dramatic landscape that rewards slow mornings and long dinners with a view. It’s romantic and photogenic, but it’s not really a beach destination, most of the coastline is volcanic cliff, not sand.
Mykonos is flatter and more social. Mykonos Town’s whitewashed lanes and windmills are just as photogenic, but the island’s real draw is its beach clubs, from low-key spots to full daytime party scenes at Paradise and Super Paradise. It’s the busier, younger, later-night island of the two.
Cost
Both islands are among the more expensive in Greece, but Mykonos generally runs higher, especially for beach club service and July hotel rates. Santorini’s caldera-view hotels in Oia are pricey too, but Santorini has more budget options on the black-sand east coast (Perissa, Kamari) than Mykonos has anywhere close to town.
Beaches
Mykonos wins on beaches outright, wide stretches of sand, calm water, and organized beach clubs with loungers and service. Santorini’s beaches are volcanic and rockier, better for a swim than a full beach day.
Getting between them
High-speed ferries connect Santorini and Mykonos directly in about 2-3 hours depending on the operator and season, running multiple times a day from June through September. Combining both in one trip is common and easy to plan around, most visitors do Mykonos first for the energy, then Santorini second to wind down.
Which one for you
Couples and honeymooners: Santorini, for the views and quieter pace.
Groups of friends and nightlife-focused trips: Mykonos.
First-time Greek island trip with more time: both, Mykonos (or Mykonos and Paros) first, Santorini second.
