The State Department’s Level 4 Do Not Travel advisory for the Democratic Republic of the Congo remains in force, tied to an Ebola outbreak that the World Health Organization declared a Public Health Emergency of International Concern on May 17.
The CDC has paralleled the warning with an updated Level 3, Reconsider Nonessential Travel, health notice for the DRC, most recently refreshed in May as case counts continued to be monitored across the country.
The outbreak carries a direct consequence for US-bound travel: the Department of Homeland Security bars anyone who has been in the DRC within the previous 21 days from boarding a commercial flight into the United States, requiring a full 21-day period outside the country first.
The outbreak is also disrupting regional travel beyond US-bound flights. Uganda has limited crossings at its border with the DRC to essential traffic only, suspending public bus service, general public transport, flights, and Semliki River ferry crossings between the two countries.
