Amtrak has scheduled bus substitutions for its Piedmont service between Raleigh and Charlotte, North Carolina, on August 3 through 6, as crews carry out track work along the corridor near Greensboro. Riders holding tickets for affected Piedmont trains during the window should expect to travel part or all of their route by chartered motorcoach instead of rail.
The North Carolina Department of Transportation, which co-sponsors Piedmont service with Amtrak, said the closure supports ongoing maintenance intended to improve reliability on one of the state’s busiest passenger rail corridors. Amtrak is notifying booked passengers directly and posting updated schedules through its Service Alerts and Notices page as the work progresses.
Amtrak has flagged additional track work windows later in August, including a second stretch between Greensboro and Raleigh from August 24 through 27, suggesting riders should plan for intermittent disruption on the corridor through the rest of the month. Bus substitution segments typically add 30 to 60 minutes to a trip compared with the equivalent rail leg.
The disruption comes as Amtrak pushes ahead with a broader capital push across its network, including new NextGen Acela service on the Northeast Corridor and planning studies for expanded New Haven-to-Providence capacity. Piedmont riders are advised to check their specific train number before departure, since not every trip in the affected window requires a bus segment.
