Royal Caribbean has updated its list of prohibited items for guests boarding its ships, refining rules around power strips and multi-outlet adapters after growing safety concerns about outlets that lack built-in surge protection. The cruise line says any multi-plug adapter brought on board must have no more than four built-in outlets and integrated surge protection to be allowed past security screening.
The change is the latest in a series of updates to Royal Caribbean’s banned items list this year, which has also added restrictions on certain smart glasses in specific onboard venues and expanded language around devices capable of intercepting wireless signals. Items that don’t meet the new criteria are confiscated at the terminal, with some returned at the end of the sailing and others disposed of permanently.
Cruise lines have tightened power-related rules across the industry in recent years after fires linked to faulty extension cords and uncertified electronics aboard ships. Guests are still permitted to bring standard European-style plug adapters for cabins wired with European outlets, but bare extension cords, irons, steamers, and other heating devices remain barred entirely.
Royal Caribbean recommends guests review the current prohibited items list on its website before packing, since items confiscated at the terminal cannot be shipped home and are not eligible for reimbursement. The cruise line said the update is meant to reduce onboard electrical hazards without limiting guests’ ability to charge multiple devices in their staterooms.
