A major aviation disruption swept across Asia and the Middle East on August 19, recording more than 4,100 flight delays and 247 cancellations across roughly 25 major hubs, including Tokyo Haneda, Dubai and Delhi. The scale of the disruption ranks among the largest single-day events the region has seen this summer.
All Nippon Airways logged 140 delays, including 116 at Tokyo Haneda and 24 at New Chitose. In the Gulf, Emirates and FlyDubai each logged roughly 185 delays tied to Dubai operations. New Delhi absorbed 221 delays and 22 cancellations, with Air India, IndiGo and SpiceJet all affected.
Airlines and analysts pointed to a mix of factors behind the gridlock, including under-the-radar military activity, temporary civil airspace restrictions, and regional tensions such as renewed Houthi-Saudi border escalations near Jizan and Abha, which forced rerouting and knock-on delays across connected hub airports.
Travelers flying through major Asian and Gulf hubs in the coming days should build in extra connection time and monitor airline apps closely, as controllers and carriers work through the backlog of delayed aircraft and crews.
