Phoenix Air Traffic Controller Averts Danger After Two American Airlines Flights Share the Same Call Sign

Air traffic control tower against the sky

Two separate American Airlines aircraft were both operating under the radio call sign “American 2482” in the Phoenix sector shortly after midnight on August 14, 2026, creating a potentially dangerous mix-up as one flight arriving from Chicago descended through 11,000 feet while another American 2482 departing Phoenix climbed toward 9,000 feet. Air traffic controllers caught the conflict and intervened before it became a genuine safety issue.

The overlap traced back to an operational scheduling issue: severe weather had delayed the original Chicago-to-Phoenix flight, so American assigned a different aircraft in Phoenix to operate the outbound Phoenix-to-Chicago leg on schedule, inadvertently putting two aircraft in the air under the identical flight number and call sign at the same time. Once controllers and pilots recognized the overlap, they used precise phraseology, referring to “American 2482 on approach” and “American 2482 on departure,” to keep the two flights clearly distinguished.

The FAA confirmed that required separation was maintained between the two aircraft throughout the encounter and that neither flight received a collision avoidance resolution advisory, meaning the onboard systems never flagged an imminent conflict. Both aircraft continued on to their destinations and landed safely, with the incident resolved entirely through standard air traffic control procedures.

The FAA has said it is looking into how the duplicate call sign situation arose in the first place, since airlines are generally expected to avoid assigning the same flight number to two simultaneously operating aircraft. The episode is a reminder that layered safety systems, including trained controllers and standardized radio phraseology, are designed specifically to catch and resolve exactly this kind of rare scheduling conflict before it becomes dangerous.
