Scandinavian Airlines has completed a fleet retrofit at a pace the industry is not used to. All 81 of its Airbus A320neo aircraft now carry Starlink connectivity, and the installation programme ran for roughly six months from first aircraft to last. The A320neo accounts for around seventy per cent of the SAS fleet, which means the carrier has gone from essentially nothing to high-speed broadband on the large majority of its European flying inside a single year. Remaining aircraft types are being prepared now, with further installations scheduled before the end of 2026.
The performance figures are the part passengers will notice. Starlink’s low-earth-orbit constellation delivers speeds SAS quotes at over 500 Mbps, available gate to gate rather than switching on above ten thousand feet. That is enough to stream video, hold a video call, or work from a cloud drive at something close to the speed you would get at home. Legacy geostationary satellite systems on short-haul European aircraft typically deliver a fraction of that, with latency high enough to make live calls unpleasant, which is why most passengers stopped bothering to connect.
Price is the other half of the story. SAS is not charging for the service — it is free to EuroBonus loyalty members, and joining EuroBonus is free. That puts SAS alongside the small group of carriers treating fast connectivity as a standard amenity rather than an ancillary revenue line, and it applies competitive pressure across the Nordic and wider European short-haul market, where paid Wi-Fi passes remain common and are frequently priced per flight segment.
Six months for eighty-one aircraft is the number that will be studied elsewhere. Retrofits compete for the same hangar slots and downtime as heavy maintenance, and connectivity programmes at other carriers have historically stretched across years. SAS chose to concentrate the work on a single, standardised sub-fleet, which is exactly the condition that makes fast rollouts possible. Airlines with more fragmented fleets will find the same timeline harder to reproduce, even where the hardware and the commercial case are identical.
