Omni Has Never Opened a Resort Outside the US. That Changes in 2027.

Omni Hotels & Resorts has appointed Fernando Gibaja as general manager of Omni Pontoque Resort at Punta de Mita, the last significant hire before a hotel opens and the clearest signal yet that the spring 2027 date is holding. The property is the Dallas-based company’s first luxury resort in Mexico — a genuine first for a chain that has built its reputation almost entirely on US convention hotels, historic city properties and domestic golf resorts.

The site sits in Riviera Nayarit on Mexico’s Pacific coast, northwest of Puerto Vallarta, on the stretch of coastline that has spent the last decade absorbing the luxury demand that Los Cabos and the Riviera Maya could no longer hold. Punta de Mita is already home to several ultra-premium resorts, and the appeal for operators is the geography: a sheltered bay, a mountain backdrop, and an international airport close enough to make a long weekend practical from Texas and California.

The build is substantial rather than boutique. Omni Pontoque will have 244 guestrooms and suites plus two four-bedroom villas, all oriented toward the Bay of Banderas. The amenity list runs to three restaurant concepts, a spa with fourteen treatment rooms, two retail outlets, multiple pools split between adult-only and family configurations, a fitness centre and a kids club — a programme aimed squarely at the multigenerational family market rather than the couples-only segment.

For Omni the strategic question is whether a brand known domestically for reliable, large-format American hospitality can carry that reputation into a resort market where the competition is international luxury. The project represents a roughly $225 million investment and broke ground on the Pacific coast with the company describing it as a company first. Bookings have not opened; the resort is scheduled to welcome its first guests in spring 2027.
