Eleven of Frontier’s Fifteen Detroit Routes Used to Be Spirit’s

Frontier Airlines will begin flying between Detroit Metropolitan Wayne County Airport and New York LaGuardia on 20 November, operating daily during peak holiday periods and three times a week otherwise, with introductory fares advertised from USD 69. The addition takes Frontier’s Detroit network to 15 nonstop destinations. Eleven of those 15 were served by Spirit Airlines before it ceased operations earlier this year. Frontier expects to offer about 41% more seats from Detroit in March 2027 than it did a year earlier.

Detroit is the clearest single illustration of a strategy Frontier has been running across the country. Spirit’s collapse left a set of ultra-low-cost markets with proven demand, established price expectations and no incumbent — the rarest combination in US aviation. Frontier has spent the year adding routes into exactly those gaps, including a batch of twenty new services launching between November and February that map almost one-to-one onto Spirit’s former or recently reduced network.

LaGuardia makes it more than an opportunistic route add. Slots at LaGuardia are capped and tightly held, so a low-cost carrier building a presence there is doing something structurally harder than adding a flight in a wide-open market. Pairing a slot-constrained New York airport with a large Midwest hub airport gives Frontier a route with genuine year-round business and visiting-friends-and-relatives demand, rather than the purely leisure profile that dominates much of its map.

The competitive question is what happens to fares. Delta is dominant at Detroit and holds a strong LaGuardia position, and Frontier’s arrival on a nonstop it already serves invites a response. Historically, ultra-low-cost entry on a hub-to-hub route pulls the cheapest fare buckets down for a season or two before capacity rationalises. Travellers booking Detroit-New York for the holidays have a window in which that competition is live.
