Two Airlines Now Share Every Kuala Lumpur Flight to China

A busy city street lined with tall buildings and traffic

Malaysia Airlines and China Southern Airlines are widening their partnership to five more routes between Malaysia and China, effective October 25. The additions link Kuala Lumpur with Shenzhen, Changsha, Xiamen, Chengdu and Zhengzhou, and they complete a notable milestone: every Kuala Lumpur route the two airlines operate to and from mainland China will now be covered by their codeshare.

That full list includes Kuala Lumpur’s links with Guangzhou, Beijing Daxing, Shanghai Pudong, Shenzhen, Changsha, Xiamen, Chengdu Tianfu and Zhengzhou. Under the arrangement, each airline places its flight code on eligible services operated by the other, so passengers can book a single itinerary that combines both carriers and connect onward through either network.

The partnership has been built in stages. It began with the Kuala Lumpur to Guangzhou route in July 2023, then expanded in July 2024 to Beijing Daxing, Shanghai Pudong and the Guangzhou to Penang route. This latest step comes as travel demand between Southeast Asia and China continues to recover and as both countries have made it easier for each other’s citizens to visit.

For travelers, the practical benefit is choice and simpler connections. Someone flying from a secondary Chinese city such as Changsha or Zhengzhou can now book through to Malaysia Airlines destinations beyond Kuala Lumpur on one ticket, and Malaysian travelers gain easier access to China Southern’s domestic network from its Guangzhou hub. As with any codeshare, it is worth checking which airline actually operates each flight, since baggage rules and onboard service follow the operating carrier.
