American Airlines plans to build its largest lounge yet at Charlotte Douglas International Airport, along with the first Flagship Lounge at the hub. The new Admirals Club is expected to span 40,000 square feet, which the airline’s plans describe as the biggest lounge in its system. Charlotte is American’s second-largest hub, so the investment lands at a major connection point.
No opening date has been announced for either lounge, and observers guess 2028 or later. Work on the Admirals Club is set to begin before the end of 2026, while no construction timeline has been given for the Flagship Lounge. Its location is also unclear, since the roughly 40,000 square feet reported in earlier plans may not leave room for both spaces.
The design is expected to follow the airline’s newer lounge concept, previously seen in Philadelphia. Planned features include spa-style shower suites, bars and serveries, and zones for relaxing, dining, working and recharging. An earlier plan from 2023 placed the lounges on a mezzanine near the Concourse D and E connector, though that has not been confirmed.
For frequent flyers, the news is a long-term promise rather than a near-term change. The existing Charlotte clubs will stay as they are for now, and the Flagship Lounge, which is typically reserved for international premium and top-tier travelers, would give the hub something it has never had.
