Disney Has Named the Ship It Is Building for Japan Alone

Cruise ship docked in a harbor

Oriental Land, the company behind Tokyo Disney Resort, has named the first Disney Cruise Line ship that will be based in Japan: Disney Imagination. The vessel will be operated through the subsidiary Oriental Land Cruise Co. under the Disney Cruise Line Japan brand, and its home port will be Tokyo.

It belongs to the Wish class, making it a sister to Disney Wish, with changes tailored to the Japanese market. Delivery is planned for 2028, and service is due to start in spring 2029. The ship will measure about 140,000 gross tons with roughly 1,250 staterooms, though the announcement does not state total passenger capacity.

Disney Imagination is LNG-powered and is being built by Meyer Werft in Papenburg, Germany. Onboard, guests will find a theatre seating more than 1,300, original shows, character meet-and-greets, three main restaurants and about 30 food and beverage venues. Ariel and Sebastian from The Little Mermaid will appear on the stern.

Itineraries and further onboard details are expected at a later date, so travelers cannot yet plan around specific sailings. For now, the news confirms that one of the world’s best-known cruise brands is committing a dedicated ship to a single Asian market, an unusually long-term bet when delivery is still two years away.
