Portugal has chosen Lufthansa as the winning bidder for a minority stake in its flag carrier. The German group agreed to buy 44.9% of TAP Air Portugal for about 1.2 billion euros, beating a rival offer from Air France-KLM in the race for the airline.
The sale does not hand Lufthansa control. The Portuguese government remains TAP’s largest shareholder, and 5% of the company is reserved for employees. The transaction still needs approval from European regulators before it can close, so nothing changes for passengers yet.
The prize is Lisbon, a hub that funnels traffic between Europe and the Americas and Africa. For Lufthansa Group, which already owns several European network airlines, a stake in TAP would add a southwestern gateway to its portfolio. For Air France-KLM, losing the contest means a competitor gains a foothold in a market it wanted.
Travelers should not expect immediate changes to schedules, loyalty programs or alliance membership, and any such moves would depend on the regulatory outcome and on terms of the deal that have not yet been spelled out publicly. We will follow the approval process as it develops.
