Moscow’s Airport Limits Left Planes Circling Away From Armenia’s Capital

Temporary restrictions across Moscow’s airports starting October 11, 2026 disrupted travel between the Russian capital and Yerevan, Armenia. At Zvartnots airport, two flights were delayed and two were cancelled, a small number in absolute terms but a visible dent for a route many travelers rely on.

The wider effect on Moscow’s airspace was larger. More than 25 Moscow-bound aircraft were diverted to other cities while the restrictions were in force. When a hub restricts operations, planes in the air must land elsewhere, and crews, passengers and baggage then need to be repositioned, which can leave delays that outlast the restriction itself.

Whether affected passengers can claim compensation depends on the rules that apply to each flight, including the airline, the route and where the journey began. Restrictions imposed by authorities are usually treated as outside an airline’s control, so payments are often unlikely, but rebooking or refunds remain the baseline for cancelled services.

Travelers with plans between Armenia and Russia should monitor their flights closely and allow flexibility for connections. Keeping documents for any extra costs, such as hotels during a diversion, can help if the airline or an insurer later reviews a claim. The report does not say how long the restrictions lasted.
