Melbourne Is About to Get a Daily Flight to Helsinki, With a Catch

Finnair begins daily service between Melbourne and Helsinki on October 25, 2026, and the catch is a stop in Bangkok along the way. The airline is flying the route with the Airbus A350-900 and selling it both as a single journey and as separate Melbourne-Bangkok and Bangkok-Helsinki segments, with multi-city stopovers also possible.

The schedule works like this. Flight AY146 leaves Melbourne in the mid-afternoon, reaches Bangkok in the mid-evening, waits about 105 minutes, then arrives in Helsinki early the next morning. Going the other way, AY145 departs Helsinki just after midnight, lands in Bangkok mid-afternoon and, after another 105-minute transit, arrives in Melbourne at 6:15 a.m. local time.

Cabin details come from reservation systems and are described as planned. Business class uses Finnair’s AirLounge seat, which does not recline but converts into a flat bed when the leg rest is raised. Premium economy is laid out two-four-two and economy three-three-three. The aircraft stays the same at the Bangkok stop, so there is no change of plane for through passengers.

For Australians heading to Europe, it adds another one-stop option via Southeast Asia, with the Nordic hub as the gateway to dozens of onward destinations. For Finnish and European travelers, it puts Melbourne within a single connection, and Bangkok itself becomes a tempting stopover point on a long trip.
