American Just Doubled Its Starlink Plan to Cover Every Mainline Jet

American Airlines has widened its plan to install Starlink Wi-Fi to cover its entire mainline fleet. Over the summer, the airline said it would start installing the satellite internet system in 2027 on more than 500 Airbus A320-family aircraft, including the A319, A320, A321, A321neo and A321XLR. The expanded plan now adds Boeing 737, 777 and 787 jets, bringing the total to more than 1,000 mainline planes.

Installation is still expected to begin in early 2027, though the airline has not said when the rollout will finish. American has no plans to equip its regional jets, which means passengers on shorter regional flights will not see the upgrade. The reporting did not confirm what American will charge, if anything, for the service.

The move puts American in step with its biggest rivals, though on different timelines. United plans to have Starlink on all its mainline and regional jets by the end of 2027. Delta has chosen a different path, partnering with Amazon Leo, a service that the article says is launching in 2028 at the earliest, and its commitment covers only part of its fleet.

For travelers, the competitive picture is shifting toward faster, more consistent in-flight internet on the big U.S. network carriers. Because rollouts take time, the cabin you board in 2027 may or may not have it, so it is worth checking the aircraft type before expecting a streaming-grade connection. Regional-jet flyers on American will have to wait.
