United Is About to Stop Counting Flights Toward Elite Status

United Airlines is overhauling how MileagePlus members earn elite status. Starting January 1, 2027, Premier Qualifying Flights are eliminated, so the number of flight segments no longer counts toward status. Premier Qualifying Points, which are based on spending, become the only qualification metric across every tier.

That also ends the hybrid paths that let members mix flights and dollars. Every tier will now depend on spending from United ticket purchases and eligible co-branded credit cards. One flying requirement survives: members must still take four flight segments on United or United Express. The change hits frequent travelers on cheap fares hardest, because racking up many short, low-priced trips no longer helps.

Premier 1K, the airline’s top published tier, rises to 32,000 points from 28,000, an increase of about 14 percent. The PQP-only requirements for Silver, Gold and Platinum are described as unchanged. Travelers who spend heavily on premium cabins or put large expenses on a United card may come out ahead, while those who fly often for less will need to rethink their routine.

The practical window is the rest of 2026. Members who are close to a tier under the current rules should check their balances now, since the existing system governs this year’s qualification. After January, spending is the game, and loyalty watchers expect other airlines to be watched closely for similar moves.
