Airports across Asia recorded 5,414 flight delays and 472 cancellations on October 20, according to a regional tally drawn from flight-tracking data. The disruption spread across China, India, Indonesia, Japan and the Gulf, with several unrelated causes stacking up on the same day.

China’s Tianshan airport reported the most delays at 341, followed by Shanghai Pudong with 293 delays and 11 cancellations, and Tokyo Haneda with 284 delays. Jakarta’s Soekarno-Hatta recorded 39 cancellations. Dubai International showed 173 delays and 24 cancellations in the same dataset, and Riyadh’s King Khalid International logged 43 cancellations.

The reasons differed by country. Attacks on Riyadh’s airport earlier this month led airlines to suspend services, and operators need Saudi approval to resume flights. In Indonesia, forest-fire smoke has affected 2,604 domestic flights between August 11 and October 19. Chinese forecasts pointed to low clouds, reduced visibility, frost and snow, while Thailand has a heavy-rain warning covering October 21 to 25.

A caution is in order: delay counts alone do not prove a specific cause, and the compiling outlet notes that weather does not automatically explain Bangkok’s 264 delays. Travelers connecting through Asian hubs this week should build in longer layovers, watch airline apps for gate changes, and consider travel insurance that covers missed connections.
