Southwest Is Going Global Through an Unlikely Gulf Partner

Etihad Airways and Southwest Airlines have announced a loyalty partnership that will let members of Etihad Guest and Southwest Rapid Rewards earn and redeem across both networks. It starts in spring 2027, with further details to be published on etihad.com closer to launch.

For Etihad Guest members, the deal means earning miles on eligible Southwest flights and spending them across Southwest’s network in the United States, Mexico, Central America and the Caribbean. Rapid Rewards members, in turn, can earn points on eligible Etihad flights and redeem them across Etihad’s global network, including newer destinations such as Krabi, Zanzibar and Hanoi.

The currencies keep their own rules. Etihad Guest miles can go toward flights, cabin upgrades, hotel stays and holidays, and items in the Etihad Guest Reward Shop. Rapid Rewards points can be earned on all fares and used for any available seat on Southwest-operated flights, with no blackout dates and no expiry.

The pairing makes geographic sense. Etihad flies to six U.S. cities, namely Atlanta, Boston, Charlotte, Chicago, New York and Washington, plus Toronto, with Calgary flights beginning October 25. Travelers leaving Abu Dhabi’s Zayed International Airport can also clear U.S. immigration and customs before departure, which pairs neatly with onward domestic connections.
