Airbnb Is Finally Done With the Checkout Chore List

Bright vacation rental kitchen and dining area

Airbnb is ending one of the most common complaints about vacation rentals: the checkout chore list. Under a policy update, hosts are generally not allowed to ask guests to complete tasks that require significant effort or time. The rule applies to reservations booked on or after November 20, 2026.

The examples reported include stripping beds, hauling trash to an outside disposal site, doing laundry, and washing and putting away dishes. More broadly, tasks a cleaner would typically perform are covered. Hosts also generally may not impose fines or other penalties on guests.

There is some flexibility. Airbnb may allow exceptions depending on context, such as limits on shower time during drought restrictions or animal-proof trash containers in bear country. Listings will get a rules and requests section, and any remaining cleaning requests will carry an includes-cleaning-requests warning, so guests can see them before they book.

For travelers, the change makes the total cost of a stay easier to compare, since a low nightly rate paired with a long chore list was often a hidden expense in time. The date is tied to when a reservation is booked, not when the stay happens, so trips booked before November 20 may still come with chores. Guests should read the house rules before booking.
