Malaysia Needed a Record Finish. The Haze Has Other Plans.

A city skyline shrouded in haze

Haze from Indonesian forest and peatland fires has drifted into Malaysia and Singapore just as year-end travel planning heats up. Malaysian tour operators report reduced bookings and cancellations, mostly for November, according to the president of the Malaysian Association of Tour and Travel Agents.

The disruption is already visible in the air. Indonesia’s Transportation Ministry recorded 2,604 haze-affected domestic flights between August 11 and October 19, including 1,420 cancellations or postponements. Firefly canceled its six daily Subang-Seletar round trips in October, and Singapore sightseeing itineraries may be shortened.

The haze lands on a tourism year that was already lagging. Malaysia welcomed 28.8 million international visitors from January to August, up 1.8 percent, against a full-year goal of 47 million. Hitting that figure would require 18.2 million arrivals from September to December, roughly 31 percent more than the same stretch last year.

Some operators are adapting. Destination Asia has suspended houseboat cruises in Indonesia’s Tanjung Puting National Park and is offering alternatives in Java, Bali, Lombok and Komodo. There is no consolidated national cancellation data yet, so the final damage will depend on how widely travelers choose to avoid the region. Anyone with fall plans should check air-quality readings and refund terms before booking.
