Heathrow Is Nearly Full, Yet Six New Routes Just Squeezed In

Heathrow announced six route additions and two airline entrants for winter 2026-27 on October 20, noting that they arrive while the airport is operating close to capacity. The list spans leisure beaches, a Central American first and a long-haul one-stop, giving UK travelers more reasons to avoid connecting through other hubs.

Two of the routes have already started. Virgin Atlantic began flying to Phuket three times a week on October 18, and Xiamen Airlines started its three-weekly Xiamen service on September 6. Both give travelers direct access to destinations that previously needed a connection, and the Phuket flight arrives just as the winter dry season gets going.

The next wave starts this weekend. British Airways begins five weekly flights to San José, Costa Rica, on October 25, followed by twice-weekly Fuerteventura service from December 13. BeOnd launches a three-times-weekly Red Sea service on December 15, with onward links to the Maldives through its wider network.

The longest-haul addition arrives in the new year. From January 9, 2027, British Airways will fly daily to Melbourne with a one-stop routing via Kuala Lumpur. Heathrow says it serves 230 destinations in more than 80 countries, so the new flights are incremental rather than transformative, but they show where airlines are choosing to use scarce slots.
