A New Essex Station Is Drawing More Than Double Its Forecast Crowds

Railway station platform

Beaulieu Park, the newest station on the Great Eastern Main Line, has handled more than 800,000 passenger journeys since it opened in October 2025. That is well beyond what planners expected: early projections put first-year use at between 290,000 and 390,000 journeys, so the station has already passed the top of that range more than twice over.

GBR Anglia, the rail body that oversees the line, says the figures significantly exceed those forecasts. The station sits on the northern edge of Chelmsford, in Essex, and was built to serve the growing north of the city, take pressure off the central station and support around 10,000 new homes planned for the Chelmsford Garden Community.

For commuters and visitors, the milestone suggests demand for new rail stops tied to housing growth can arrive faster than models predict. A busier Beaulieu Park may help ease crowding at Chelmsford’s main station, though the figures reported do not break down how many journeys were new trips and how many shifted from elsewhere on the network.

The figure comes from a rail industry news roundup on October 27, which also noted flooding that closed the Conwy Valley line in North Wales between Llandudno Junction and Blaenau Ffestiniog, with Transport for Wales warning no trains would run for the rest of the day. Anyone planning rail travel in Britain this week should check live service updates before setting out.
